Border: width alone is not enough without a style

Useful to know

border combines border width, style and colour. A declaration such as border: 2px red does not provide a visible style, so the expected line may be absent. [1]

For a basic border, border: 2px solid red supplies all three parts. Remember that omitted components in the shorthand return to their initial values rather than preserving earlier settings.
