In brief
Mounds, runestones and a church present different cultural layers.
Useful to know
In Jelling, the mounds and one of the runestones are associated with the pagan Norse culture. The other stone and the church represent the Christianization of Denmark around the middle of the 10th century. [1]
On a plan, consider the mutual position of individual monuments, instead of perceiving them as a single construction. Different shapes and materials correspond to different roles. It is an ensemble in which architecture, inscription and landscape are read together. The common ground does not remove the differences between a burial embankment, a stone sign, and a religious building.
