In brief
The change of resistance is used to measure the temperature of various liquids.
Useful to know
The Bosch temperature sensor uses an NTC resistor: its resistance decreases as the temperature rises. The applications described include water, fuel, and oil, and the signal is involved in engine and transmission management. [1]
The same principle does not mean the same component for all places. The housing, characteristic and connection must be suitable for the particular system. An oil temperature sensor is not selected just because it looks like another one with a similar jack.
On a diagnostic screen, specify what medium is being measured. "Temperature 90 degrees" without parameter name is not sufficient description. The comparison only makes sense with the right conditions and expectations for the particular car. This text explains the conversion of temperature to signal without setting a universal normal value for all fluids and modes.
