In brief
Stopping pointing with a mouse is not equivalent to disabled.
Useful to know
pointer-events: none causes pointing devices to miss the item as a target. The click can get to an element below it instead of the visual shell. This does not mean that the element is semantically off. [1]
Item with this setting can remain reachable via Tab. For example, a transparent decorative layer may omit the mouse, but a truly inaccessible button must use the appropriate HTML state. Check the parents' handlers as well: events from permitted children can go through them. The CSS rule is not a protection against sending a request.
