In brief
The two fuels can start from similar raw materials, but they are not the same. The method of processing matters.
Useful to know
Renewable diesel and biodiesel are not synonymous. The AFDC describes the former as a hydrocarbon fuel, often obtained by hydrotreatment, and the biodiesel as esters produced by transesterification. [1]
Similar origin from oils or fats does not mean the same end product. Therefore, information about one fuel should not be automatically transferred to the other just because of the word "renewable".
The source also differs the specifications: renewable diesel may meet the EN 15940 standard for paraffin diesel fuels. [1] This does not negate the need to check eligibility for a specific vehicle.
Practically, when describing a product, look for the exact standard, production process and documentation of the car. Do not assume that every green trademark denotes the same composition. Neither the origin of the raw material nor any laboratory indicator alone determines all the characteristics and overall impact of the fuel.
