In brief
When delayed, the electric motor can work as a generator. Some of the energy of the movement is restored without disappearing the need for friction brakes.
Useful to know
In regenerative braking, the electric motor switches to generator mode. The wheels transmit energy through the drive, and some of it becomes electric and can be stored in the battery. The same action creates resistance that slows the car down. [1]
Bosch points out that when the generator does not provide the required braking torque, a friction brake is added. [1] Therefore, regeneration does not mean that the discs and brake pads are no longer tasked.
It's a simple mental check to trace the source: energy comes from the moving car. No free energy is created to fully compensate for the previous acceleration.
The strength and behavior of regeneration depends on the particular system and conditions. We do not promise a universal recovery rate. For real model modes, follow its lead, instead of expecting that all hybrids and electric cars will react equally when the pedal is released.
